Our signature mini stack is a single row of kiln-dried firewood that measures two feet wide by four feet high — about the size of your average garbage can. We split every piece of firewood in our mini stack to a standard length of 15.5 inches. The stack contains around 80 pieces of wood, but the total will vary from stack to stack.
All our mini stacks also come held together by netting to make it easy to store and access the wood. The compact stack is ideal for storage in a crowded garage, outdoor shed or basement. We can place the stack anywhere on the main level of your property per your instructions.
Why is your firewood more expensive than your competitors?
The reason for our higher prices can be summed up in one word: quality. It’s more expensive to make better quality firewood, so we need to charge more to stay in business.
It costs us more to produce our wood because we take the extra step of kiln drying it. The additional equipment and labor required to make kiln-dried firewood significantly increases our bottom line, which is why we must charge more to make a profit.
But we would never eliminate this step because it’s crucial for giving our customers the best firewood experience possible.
How does the kiln drying process work?
Kiln drying is a better alternative to the standard practice of seasoning (i.e., air drying) firewood. If you’ve ever chopped your own firewood, you’re familiar with this process. It works by stacking freshly split wood and leaving it out until it’s dry enough to burn. This usually takes at least six months.
Our kiln drying process is a speedier and more effective way to remove moisture from wood. Once we split the wood, we place the pieces inside a large kiln. We then heat the kiln to 265°F and leave the wood in it for 36 hours. That super-hot enclosed environment removes most of the moisture from the wood so that it comes out of the kiln with a moisture content of below 20%. We always inspect the wood with a moisture meter to ensure each batch is below that 20% threshold.
So, as you can see, the kiln drying process makes it much quicker to dry wood. But more importantly, it also ensures a more consistent quality of firewood than seasoning. Seasoning will rarely get the wood down below that 20% threshold. Plus, the kiln drying process purifies the wood of all insects, mold and fungus. In contrast, seasoning only puts the wood at risk of infestation.
Is it worth it to buy firewood that’s kiln-dried?
Yes! We believe it’s worth it to buy firewood that’s kiln-dried, even though it costs more, for three key reasons:
It always contains less than 20% moisture. As a result, it’s easier to light and burns more efficiently with less smoke than standard seasoned wood.
The kiln-drying process removes all insects, mold and fungus from the wood, making it safe to store indoors and transport anywhere.
The wood produces very little dirty smoke or creosote, which is better for the environment.
For all these reasons and more, kiln-dried firewood is a must-have for anyone who wants a better fire-making experience.
Aren’t you too far away to deliver to the Twin Cities?
Many people ask us this because we’re located in Rochester, MN. This does put us about 60 miles outside the Twin Cities metro region. Still, this distance hasn’t stopped us from providing convenient delivery to many Minneapolis-St. Paul area residents.
Our delivery team is ready to handle orders from anywhere throughout the Twin Cities region. And we can get wood out to the Twin Cities within 3-5 days. You’ll always receive an accurate ETA from us.
Can I buy firewood in wholesale bundles from you?
Yes! We can ship neatly bundled pallets of clean kiln-dried firewood anywhere in the United States. The wood comes USDA-certified for transport.
Our wholesale bundles are perfect for convenience stores, grocery stores, parks, campgrounds, hardware stores and other retail outlets. Please contact us today to discuss selling our wood at your business.
Which firewood type burns the hottest and longest?
Hardwoods like oak, hickory and birch burn the hottest and longest. Hardwoods burn better than softwoods because the wood is denser and naturally contains a lower moisture content. But if you want a long-burning fire, opt for kiln-dried firewood – especially kiln-dried hardwoods.
What are the worst types of firewood to burn?
We only sell the best kiln-dried firewood, but other companies often choose cheaper options. Firewood that has been seasoned or is freshly cut will always burn less efficiently than our kiln-dried alternative.
But if you’re in a pinch and have to grab wood while traveling, avoid firs, elms, poplars and pines – especially if you plan on burning inside a fireplace. They will burn quickly, and some (like pine) create sticky sap and a lot of smoke.
What species of Minnesota firewood should I order?
One of the great things about buying firewood from ProCut Firewood is that you can purchase wood by the species. We offer the following species to choose from:
Birch
Cherry
Hickory
Oak
Mixed Hardwood
The species you should choose will depend on what you want to get out of your wood. For example, we’d recommend oak or hickory if you’re looking for super-hot fires. For great-smelling fires, you can’t go wrong with the fruity aroma of cherry. And the attractive blue flames of birch make a nice decorative touch at parties.
After I buy firewood, how should I store it?
It’s important to store your kiln-dried firewood in a way that doesn’t compromise the pristine quality of the wood by exposing it to moisture. Here are some best practices to follow to keep your wood from getting wet:
Stack your wood so that it’s elevated off the ground. You can do this by stacking it on a pallet or cinder blocks.
Store it indoors in a garage or shed if possible. If you must store it outdoors, make sure you cover it. But don’t cover it too tightly in a way that restricts the airflow to the wood.
Stack the wood so there’s airflow space between the pieces. This way, the natural breeze can help keep it dry.
Do you make cooking wood for smokers or pizza ovens?
Yes! Along with full-size firewood, we also produce extra split oak wood for smokers and personal pizza ovens. We can split the wood down to whatever size you need, whether it’s tiny 6-inch pieces or mid-size 12-inch logs. Let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll handle the rest.
If I want to buy firewood for cooking, which is the best?
You can’t go wrong with any of our firewood species for cooking. But each provides a slightly different flavor. Oak is a great universal cooking wood that provides a subtle smoky taste. In contrast, hickory provides a powerful kick, making it great for barbeques. Cherry adds a subtle fruity flavor to whatever they cook.
Is it healthier to use cooking wood or charcoal for my meals?
Cooking wood is the healthier option by far because it doesn’t include any additional (and unnecessary) chemicals. The chemicals in charcoal could transfer to your food in small amounts. Plus, you never really know what additional ingredients were added to the charcoal. Besides being healthier, cooking wood adds an extra layer of flavor to any meal.
Can you BBQ with cooking wood only?
Yes. Cooking wood gets hot enough to use in your grill as a sole heating and cooking source. However, this is only true of high-quality cooking wood like the kind you’ll find at ProCut Firewood. Lower-quality wood won’t burn long or hot enough to cook your food thoroughly and will likely create a lot of smoke that can negatively affect taste.
