What wood mulch is best?
Organic, clean mulch is always best. However, there isn’t a singular answer as to which type of organic, clean mulch is best. It depends on your project’s specifications and your aesthetic preferences. For example:
- Hardwood mulch provides the most nutrition to your soil
- Black mulch provides the most striking visual contrast
- Red mulch is ideal for a mild palette
- Natural mulch has a classic, clean appearance
- Brown mulch allows your flora to take center stage
- Gold mulch provides excellent moisture retention
Why should I use local wood mulch in my garden or landscaping?
High-quality, organic hardwood mulch has several benefits for your garden or landscaping. Of course, any of our mulch color varieties look great. But they’re also healthy for your plants because they provide the nutrients the soil needs to thrive.
How much mulch do I need?
You can order our premium mulch in bulk by the cubic yard. Not sure how many cubic yards of mulch you need? You can determine that by measuring the length and width in feet of the area you want to cover. If the site is a circle, you must measure its diameter in feet. You’ll also need to decide how deep you want to lay the mulch in inches. A depth of 2-3 inches should be plenty for our 100% hardwood mulch.
Once you have those measurements, you can plug them into the mulch calculator on our mulch page. Then all you’ll have to do is call and let us know, and we can deliver it to you in no time!
Is mulch beneficial to plants?
Yes! Mulch helps reduce soil runoff, which is ideal for effective seed germination. It also improves soil moisture retention so plants will receive adequate water much longer into a dry spell. Plus, high-quality, organic mulch will feed your soil essential nutrients as it decomposes.
Are there any areas where I shouldn’t mulch?
Although mulch can be healthy for your soil and boost your curb appeal, there are a few areas you shouldn’t mulch for various reasons. These include:
- Along your home’s exterior: This can attract unwanted pests to your home’s foundation, including termites, beetles, roaches, and more. Leave a buffer of at least a few inches between your home’s outer walls and your mulch.
- Directly at the base of trees and shrubs: Not only can this attract unwanted pests, but it can cause rot or decay. Leaving a few empty inches around the base of these plants should suffice.
- On flooded or wet ground: This can lead to mold, rot and other problems. Instead, aim to mulch when the ground is lightly damp. This will keep moisture in the soil without it remaining waterlogged.
- Areas that already have three or more inches of mulch: For most plants, more than three inches of mulch can suffocate their roots. If you need to lay new mulch and already have a thick layering, remove a little first.
Why is organic mulch better than inorganic mulch?
Organic mulch is made solely of clean wood. As it decomposes, it provides nutrients to the soil that enable healthy plant growth for an extended time. On the other hand, inorganic mulch can contain chemicals and materials that harm your soil and plants.
